JOB SEARCH BY REGIONS OF SPAIN

If you know exactly where in Spain you wish to search for jobs then you can search by regions in which we have specific pages on the most popular towns and cities.

These guides give you an idea as to what sort of jobs you can expect to find advertised as well as an overview of the town or city – after all – while getting a job is important it is also just as important to choose somewhere good in which to live.

Spain is a large country and there are very big differences between the various regions.

spain-national-flagThe Costa del Sol is probably the best area of mainland Spain to search for jobs. This very developed coast is the most popular area of Spain for tourism and has a large expatriate population and arguably the best climate in Spain which makes it a lovely place to live.

The very good weather contributes towards a longer tourist season which is a help because these do tend to be the most popular types of jobs and include work in hotels, cleaning villas and apartments as well as the usual bar and restaurant type positions.

Our most popular Costa del Sol locations for jobs and finding work include: Marbella, Malaga, Fuengirola, Torremolinos and Benalmadena.  There are also plenty of other smaller towns and resorts along the Costa del Sol but they are very much smaller places with less jobs available. This is a good area for Spanish golf jobs such as caddies and golf pros.

Slightly less popular are the Costa Blanca and Costa Brava areas which tend to comprise a series of former fishing villages with good sandy beaches but less job possibilities.

The best places to find jobs on the Costa Blanca include Torrevieja and Alicante while on the Costa Brava the extremely popular tourist resort of Lloret de Mar is a good choice.

The best areas in Spain to find jobs for professional job seekers would be the major cities of Madrid, Barcelona and Valencia.

In these Spanish cities you will find offices of major multi-national companies. There are good opportunities for working here in IT as computer jobs do not require much Spanish skills.

If you are searching for summer jobs and seasonal jobs in Spain then look at the islands of Spain which has more of an all year round season due to better weather and climate. This would apply more to the Canary Islands than the Balearic Islands as the Canaries are closer to Africa than mainland Spain.

If you want long-term work in Spain and not just seasonal work look to the Canary Islands of Tenerife, Lanzarote, Fuerteventura and Gran Canaria (with the most popular resort being Playa del Ingles).

The Balearic Islands are also very popular especially Ibiza and Majorca/Mallorca (with the most popular resort for jobs being Magaluf).

Ibiza and Mallorca are full of possibilities for jobs as holiday reps, bar jobs, dancers, pr jobs, DS’s, waiters, waitresses, chefs, restaurant jobs, hotel jobs and many other other tourism related situations vacant.

The islands are also good for watersports and marine jobs such as dive instructors, windsurfing teachers, sailing, crewing and boat maintenance.

SPANISH JOB REGULATIONS – VISAS AND N.I.E. NUMBER

Use our general job information section to read our handy guides to the rules and regulations for working in Spain.

Do I Need a Visa to Work in Spain?

If you are from a European Union country you are fortunate that you are entitled to work in Spain without applying for a visa. Other foreign nationals such as Americans, Canadians and South Americans must get a visa in advance of their stay in Spain which will last three months.

Do I Need a N.I.E. Number to Work in Spain?

Many people in Spain are employed illegally, without a contract and therefore do not need a NIE number. This number is your tax identification number in Spain (Número de Identificación de Extranjeros).

To get an N.I.E. number in Spain, go to local police station or social security office and fill out the necessary forms. Some basic details are required such as address, name, passport number etc. Obviously the form is in Spanish. You should be issued with a temporary card on the spot.

SUMMER JOBS IN SPAIN 2012 – WORK FOR YOUNG PEOPLE

We have a lot of e-mails from people who are looking for jobs and work on a full-time basis in Spain but equally there is another massive sector of the job market which is young people who just want to work in Spain for the summer.

You will often see people seeking temporary work or seasonal work in Spain and this is what they refer to. We get a lot of enquiries from students who wish to work abroad and get a job in a lively Spanish tourist resort.

A Spanish summer job for a student gives you the opportunity to be earning money but at the same time working in a party atmosphere and being able to enjoy some of your summer holiday time off.

The most popular summer jobs in Spain are to be found in the heart of the action in the numerous bars, pubs and clubs.

If you are looking for work in Spain for the summer 2012 then these venues need people to tend behind the bar, man the cloakroom, collect glasses, distribute leaflets, as dancers, DJ’s, as PR’s and as security staff (doormen/door supervisors).

Hostessing in Spain can be a lucrative job and glamorous girls with lots of style can earn a lot most of your earnings  from generous tips.

The next best summer job option apart from bar work would be working in a restaurant as a waiters or waitress as well as behind the scenes in the kitchen as chefs and cooks.

Some of the larger hotels in Spain will also require temporary staff for the summer in such roles as behind reception, cleaners, chambermaids, animators, entertainers or nursery and childcare.

One of the best summer jobs in Spain you can get would be working as a holiday rep where you are paid a good salary and your live-in accommodation and all living expenses are covered and included.

When you work a summer in Spain you don’t do it for the money, you do it for the experience so don’t expect to come back with much savings, in fact you will probably come back with less money than you started with but that doesn’t matter!

BAR JOBS IN SPAIN 2012

Most summer jobs that you can expect to get in Spain will be bar jobs. Working behind the bar is ideal because you will actually be in the very place where tourists are enjoying themselves and having fun.

You will get to meet all sorts of people and have the time of your life!

A bar job is pretty straightforward work involving serving drinks and being able to give the correct change.

You need an outgoing personality and a big smile. The big advantage with these types of jobs is that very little Spanish, if any, will be required.

The disadvantages will be that pay is low, often cash in hand and without any accommodation.

Other bar jobs that you may expect to find would-be working as a PR rep or promoter whereby you stand outside a bar or club and try and attract customers.

TYPES OF WORK AND JOBS IN SPAIN

All types of jobs are available in Spain just like any other country but much will depend on whether you are fluent in Spanish or perhaps you speak no Spanish whatsoever. Most jobs in the public sector in Spain such as working in the police force are only open to Spanish nationals only.

spain-jobsIf you are an English speaker or English speaking person there are still plenty of jobs you can get in Spain although clearly these are mostly working for companies who provide services to expatriates or jobs in the tourist sector where most customers are from outside of Spain.

Certainly on the Spanish islands such as the Canary Islands and Balearic Islands there are plenty of tourism jobs as waiters, waitresses or bar jobs where just a basic understanding of Spanish is all you need. Holiday rep jobs in Spain are a very good way of finding work before you go, as are au pair and nanny jobs.

Try not to be so choosy and you will dramatically increase your chances of getting a job in Spain. Unemployment in Spain is currently in excess of 20% of the population and therefore good jobs are hard to find. Be prepared to accept something slightly different to what you have experienced in the past.

Many people actually take on two or three different jobs in order to survive financially in Spain. The more flexible you are in your criteria for a job, the more likely is that you will survive in Spain.

As our website grows we will be adding specific pages on these types of jobs which are the most likely ways you will find work in Spain: bar jobs, waiter, waitress, restaurant, chef, cook, hotel jobs, carer jobs, nursing jobs, teaching jobs, gardeners, receptionist jobs, hairdresser jobs, beautician, dancers, door supervisor, law and legal jobs, bouncers, security, PR’s, DJ’s, cleaners, HGV drivers, sales reps, holiday rep jobs, IT jobs, building and construction jobs such as an electrician, painter, labourer, plumber or tiler, sales jobs such as telesales or telemarketing, estate agent, personal trainer, gym, dentist, doctor, computer programmer, insurance agent, customer service reps, admin, secretarial, office, swimming pool maintenance, retail managers, taxi drivers, transfer rep, engineers, marketing, accountants, mechanics, football coaches and childcare.

SALARIES AND PAY IN SPAIN

It is generally recognised that wages and salaries in Spain are lower than most other European countries however the cost of living is also comparatively lower.

The Spanish also tend to work very long hours due to the traditional siesta break in the middle of the daytime.

Always try to get the job that comes with an official working contract as this will entitle you to state health care. With a contract your employer will have to contribute social security payments on your behalf. The only other way you will be entitled to free health care is if you become self-employed and pay into the social security system yourself.

WHERE TO FIND JOBS IN SPAIN

You will find plenty of professional jobs advertised on job websites such as ours. Sadly for most of the tourism summer type jobs you will actually need to be here in Spain in the resorts and ask around going from bar to bar or from restaurant to restaurant in order to find work.

So where else can you find job vacancies, job openings and job postings? Try reading the job classifieds sections of expat newspapers and contact job recruitment agencies, job centres, human resources, or employment agencies. Here are some useful sources that we know of:

JOBS IN SPAIN FOR ENGLISH SPEAKERS 2012 &2013

We recognise that most people arriving onto this website have a lack of Spanish language skills. This is obvious from the many questions we get, for example:

  • Can I find work in Spain if I don’t speak Spanish?
  • Are there any English jobs in Spain?
  • What jobs in Spain are there for Irish people?
  • What jobs are there in Spain for English speakers?
  • Are there jobs in Spain for English people?
  • Can I find bar jobs in Spain for English speakers?
  • I want a hotel job but only speak English.

Fortunately Spain is one of the few countries where you can get a job without being able to speak the language. We do however strongly recommend that you at least learn some basic words and phrases as this will massively help you jump the queue of other expat jobseekers of which there are many.

Be aware that many people from other European countries also seek work in Spain and they tend to often speak 3 or 4 different languages which is much more appealing to employers.

Spain is a popular destination for summer work for all nationalities including German, Americans, Australians, Dutch, Swedish, Norwegian, Irish, Polish, Moroccan and South Americans such as Colombian.

Many of these nationalities are prepared to work for below minimum wage and will happily work for cash in hand so you are likely to have two compete by working for very low wages.

The most obvious types of work as an English speaker in Spain you are going to find are ones that will require little speaking such as cleaning, fitness, dishwashing, cooking, dancing, bar tending, waitering, waitressing, driving, building etc.

If however you can learn enough Spanish in advance you will be able to find good jobs in Spain as a teacher of English to Spaniards. To increase your chances of getting these teaching jobs get a qualification such as ESL or TEFL, this stands for teaching English as a foreign language.
